Ha Ushpizin

You may never have had visitors quite like these--this 2004 film set in Jerusalem takes you into the celebration of Succoth, traditionally a time for welcoming guests. A riveting glimpse into a faith and prayer of Orthodox Judaism, this whimsical yet moving holiday story is well worth your time.

A group of us sat down to watch it last night, and in addition to the fun of seeing local streets on film, Ha Ushpizin also left you with music running through your head.

This clip isn't a trailer, but the song from the closing credits--here remixed with clips from the film:

The refrain--'For You are Holy, and Your Name is Holy"

Judith and I loved the DVD a year ago. For those who may watch it, I just want to say that the clip is not the best introduction to the film, and the film is delightful.

The notes on the official movie web site are fascinating. Many of the haredi (Orthodox Jews) playing extras were essentially playing themselves. Hundreds of haredi watched bootleg copies of the movie, until the rabbi posted a notice that it was contrary to Jewish law to do so, and many sent money in to the producers.

It's too bad, but the web site isn't there any more. Anyway the movie is good.

One of my favorite films!
(Saw it at the Sydney film festival the first time).

Nice video, too (amusing)!

p.s. saw another one of my favorites last night, though it's not nearly of the same caliber: Nuova Cinema Paradiso.
