Wall Be Back

Saturday 7 of us made it out to the Basilica of Saint Paul's Outside the Walls.

Don't mess with guys with swords.

That statue is enormous--probably 25 feet tall on its pedestal.

The cloister is one of my favorite parts of the church.

Here's a detail of one of the pillars.

Saint Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles, is buried here. The mosaics inside the basilica are beautiful. One of the remarkable features of the church are the mosaics of each of the successors of Peter from the beginning up to the present day--

Another of my favorites! WOW just seeing the pictures, my heart is racing! What a great photo! I don't think we ended up with a shot like that while there (even with 1000 cameras, smile)

What a beautiful Basilica! Again, many years of prayers there that definitely blessed us our visit!

Crazy puns! But we do miss your sense of humor!

I have looked up the words in an online Latin dictionary, but am having trouble putting it into English. HIC STUDET ATQUE LEGIT MONACHORUM CETUS ET ORAT. LEGIT means both "collect" and "read." CETUS means both "sea monster" and "its flesh." It is apparently poetic with a double meaning.

My efforts give, "here try to collect (recollect?) the flesh of the monks and pray." Or "here strive to read, you monks of flesh, and pray." Help! Whoever is a Latin scholar, this is a teaching moment!

Is the Pillar Solid, carved and then decorated with stones? Sort of like an Egyptian Obelisk being one solid piece of stone.

Yeah, I think the pillar is carved from a block of stone and then has the colored pieces set into it . . .

Amazing!! Its sad that we don't see that type of work anymore. I know cost would be a huge issue in the modern world, but the skills that were commonly used on an everyday basis hundreds of years ago, thousands even, is just amazing and a lost art in many cases.
