After having arrived in Naples, we continued south the following day (the 11th) to Pompeii, the famous Roman city buried by volcanic ash in AD 79.
The suddenness of the disaster is striking--those killed were in the middle of their daily lives.
The way they were instantly snuffed out as an entire city seems like a scene of the Apocalypse.
This woman was found face-down in the ash:
Being there gives one a somber reminder of how suddenly it all could go for any one of us.
