Return Down Under

After climbing Grossglockner I was able to spend a few more days in Austria . . . and return down under--not to Australia, but to the cave that lies in the mountains above Gaming. I hadn't gone in since Spring of '95, so it was time to return.

Reading inscriptions that date back to the 1600's.

Four of us hiked the hour or so outside of the city and then were able to celebrate Mass hight up on the ridge at the entrance of the cave. We then began the steep descent through the mouth of the cave, and sqeezed through the tiny passage that barely allows you to shimmy into the total darkness.

Introduced to the Mud

The Carthusians of our Kartause had come here centuries ago, and left their mark: still inscribed on the walls are the charcoal names and dates of friars and priors who came through the same passageway.

Caving's pretty cool!

People get Austria and Australia mixed up a lot. Like, one of my Aussie professor's books always get sent to Austria (even the post!). I'm glad we've had World Youth Day to shed some expository light on the lovely (lost) land Down Under.
