Having gotten to know Dr. Steenson while he lived here in Rome, I appreciated his recent article regarding the surprising announcement from the Vatican regarding communion with the Anglican communities. A former Episcopalian bishop who was living in Rome prior to ordination to the Catholic priesthood, Steenson showed a remarkable insight and gentleness which is reflected in his writing.
While this week's announcement was unexpected, Steenson's able grasp of the history of Anglican-Catholic relations indicates how this Constitution corresponds with the efforts toward communion developing over the centuries. As witnesses of an significant step towards Christian unity, we have the opportunity to pray for continued breakthroughs in the path of reunification.
