Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

Lots of photos from my previous visit to Saint Cecilia’s church, today’s Station site.  One of the things you notice is that as patroness of music, Cecilia has the organ in particular associated with her.  Tylenda writes:

The Acts of her martyrdom (fifth century) states that on her wedding day “amid the songs of the instruments” (cantantibus organis), she sang within her heart to God alone.”  This phrase from the Acts was used as the first antiphon for vespers on her feast day, 22 November.  This was then misunderstood by the people to mean that it was Cecilia who was singing and playing the instrument.  Cecilia and the organ have been joined ever since.

So looking back at our previous pictures, I guess the clarification does provide leeway for letting the angels port up a harmonica instead of an entire organ . . .

Dear Peregrinus. Thank you for this lovely series. It contributes so much to the Lenten preparations. I have looked forward to it since your series last year.
