2 Timothy 4:21 mentions a Pudens, but is it the Senator Pudens associated with today’s Station Church? Known as one of Paul’s first converts in Rome, his two daughters Praxedes and Pudenziana are saints and martyrs with him.
The 1598 renovations surround the 4th century apse mosaic (bottom of photo).
Speaking of renovations, the walk home went past his triumphal arch: now indecorously incorporated into the adjacent buildings.
Walking with a friend, we detoured up the Campidoglio, one of the seven hills of Rome.
At the top you find the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli (the Altar of Heaven), a lovely church where Saint Helena is buried.
And where they have an impressive ambo.
And a lovely 15th century altar, “Our Lady Refuge of Sinners”.
Aracoeli also has the distinction of being one of the most chandelier-bedecked churches in the city. You can spot a few in these photos, but I’ll need to return for a haloed shot of the main altar.
