A Night at the Museum

Insider tips are the way to go. A friend mentioned that the Galleria dell'Accademia was free on Tuesday nights . . .

Yesterday after concelebrating the 7:30 at St. John the Evangelist I walked up to the Galleria, grabbing a slice of pizza along the way. There wasn't even a line (!) when I arrived there, the guard waved me through security as my pocket change set off the metal detector (it helps to wear black here . . . ) and then I had two hours free to wander the museum. The Galleria is most famous for housing Michelangelo's sculpture of David, and as I came into the hall yesterday there were so few people I could spend as long as I liked! I ran into another student from my language school, and we chatted about how amazing it was to have the access to the statue like that--

Once when we visited the United States Capitol, there was a very long line up the great front steps. Someone told us that was for the guided tour, and if you just wanted to go in, you could go to the ground floor door, to the left of the stairs. The line there was six or eight people. We had the building to ourselves, except that we had to dodge the tour groups.

In 1956 I avoided the line at the Washington Monument, which was for the elevator, by climbing the 555 stairs. They don't let you climb the stairs anymore sadly.

Sounds like the Galleria might give Redding's Turtle Bay Museum a run for their money! Please post more pictures!

Yeah, I definitely hope to post more photos soon. The Macs here at school aren't set up to let students access much more than the internet, but I might figure out a way locally to get my photos online.
