431

We were in the ruins of Ephesus today.

Paul got quite the run-around here. Read Acts 19 to hear about the dust-up that ended up in the theater of the city (at left--largest in Asia Minor): for two hours the whole city was yelling, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

We figured we'd try to recreate the moment . . .

This is the city that Paul then spent several years in, and wrote a letter to. St. John then came here with Mary and presided over the church for many years.

Then in 431, the Council of Ephesus was held, that declared Mary to be the Theotokos--Mother of God--reaffirming that Jesus was one person, fully God and fully human.

Church of Mary where the Council was held.

Things got shook up after that--a couple of earthquakes caused the city to be deserted.

So what's left is mucho old, as they say in archeological terminology.

The facade of the Library of Celsus in the ruins of Ephesus was reconstructed from the toppled stones at fabulous expense by a Swiss organization. It is very famous, and its picture is on Turkish money.

It was the Austrian Archaeological Institute (not a Swiss outfit).
