We crossed the Euphrates today.
We are now in Mesopotamia.
Current events.
We stopped for lunch in the town we'd stay in later that night: Edessa, the key northern stronghold during the Crusades.
Looming over town are the remains of their massive fortress.
Since they loom over, it's a bit of a hike to get up to where the walls are, but it was worth it.
Edessa is also the city where the Muslims believe Abraham was born; the central park below the fortress has the grotto where he was born, and a pool named for him. You can't catch the fish that live there, but you can feed them.
Abraham's pool.
